When and where to light fireworks in Shawnee Co.

TOPEKA (KSNT) - With Independence Day right around the corner, local city and county officials reiterate how to properly light fireworks for a festive Fourth of July.

Shawnee County announced Thursday, June 27 marks the first day of firework sales in unincorporated areas within Shawnee County. According to a post on social media, fireworks can be lit in the unincorporated areas from 8 a.m. Thursday, June 27 to 11:59 p.m. Thursday, July 4.

Within the City of Topeka, the legal time to light fireworks is from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. Wednesday, July 3 and 10 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. Thursday, July 4, according to the city's website. The city has several rules it wants the community to be aware of going into the holiday.

According to the city's website, people are prohibited to discharge fireworks within 500 feet of the VA Medical Center located at 2200 SW Gage Blvd. Anyone under the age of 18 must be supervised by an adult when discharging fireworks and it is unlawful to possess, transport or ignite a metal sparkler with Topeka City limits.

Violations of city ordinances when discharging fireworks are considered misdemeanors with a possible fine of $250. For more inflation about Topeka ordinances regarding fireworks, click here. A spokeswoman with the city of Topeka told 27 News if you would like to report any firework violations, you can contact the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office at (785) 251-2200 and request dispatch.
