City of OKC reminds residents not to call 911 for illegal fireworks

Oklahoma City officials are reminding residents to keep 911 phone lines open this Fourth of July.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - Oklahoma City officials are reminding residents to keep 911 phone lines open this Fourth of July.

According to the city of OKC, 911 phone lines should remain clear for those experiencing life-threatening emergencies. As residents call to report illegal fireworks, the phone lines can get busy, keeping those experiencing an emergency from getting the help they need.

“Complaints about fireworks overload 911 phone lines and can keep people experiencing an emergency from quickly connecting with a dispatcher,” Fire Chief Richard Kelley said.

Officials say residents should call 911 if a firework hurts someone or starts a fire.

The city says it is also important to report illegal fireworks. Residents can report a violation in the following ways:

  • Call: Fireworks Hotline - (405) 297-2222 between June 28 – July 8.
  • Email: action.center@okc.gov
  • Text: (405) 252-1053

“Fireworks are a serious safety hazard to people and property and should be left to professional shows,” Chief Kelley added.

Officials say anyone who violates the city's fireworks ordinances could receive a fine up to $500, have their fireworks taken away and be taken to jail.
