The Topeka Fire Department reminds residents that fireworks can be set off on July 3 from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and on July 4 from 10 a.m. to 11:59 a.m. Violations of city fireworks ordinances carry minimum fines of $250 with some offenses resulting in fines of up to $499 and/or up to 179 days in jail.
The fire department also reminds residents to be mindful of veterans. Fireworks can trigger PTSD, if you know a veteran nearby the fire department recommends speaking to them first to see if you can do anything to reduce potential issues.
The TFD said fireworks can be extremely stressful for pets. They recommended residents keep pets indoors, close the curtains and turn on the radio or television to distract them.
