ALDI is switching up a 99p fruit and it’s left shoppers completely baffled – have you noticed it?
The store is introducing the bizarre change in a bid to reduce food waste – but it’s going to take customers a while to get used to.
The UK’s fourth largest supermarket will now put pineapples on the shelves with no crown as it’s often binned by shoppers.
Aldi will now will be removing the green leaves from the fruit during the production process as it will be sent for recycling.
The removed crowns will either be used to cultivate next year’s crop or converted into animal feed, reducing food waste by an estimated 1,400 tonnes annually if the change is rolled out across stores.
The crownless pineapples are now available in select stores in the Midlands, Yorkshire and North East.
By removing the crowns, Aldi will also be able to fit more of the product into boxes to be transported to stores, meaning a potential reduction of around 187 tonnes of cardboard annually if the trial is successful.
Liz Fox, National Sustainability Director at Aldi, said: “At Aldi, we are committed to finding sustainable solutions that benefit both our customers and the environment.
“This trial of crownless pineapples is just one of the latest innovative changes we’re testing out to minimise waste and reduce our carbon footprint.”
It comes as Aldi shoppers are rushing to buy a “pretty” £9 middle aisle bargain to brighten up their garden.
The popular supermarket chain is known for selling products on the cheap and one customer recently found a bargain deal in their local store.
The savvy shopper was thrilled with her buy and quickly took to social media to show off her loot from Aldi.
She revealed the retailer was selling solar glass snowdrop stake lights to put in your garden for just £8.99.
Taking to the Facebook group, Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK, she alerted fellow shoppers of her find.
Along with pictures of the goods she wrote: “Bought this yesterday from Aldi £8.99.”
And shoppers raced to their nearest Aldi store to get their hands on the bargain retailers own branded veggie meals for as little as 99p.

When's the best time to shop at Aldi?
WHEN it comes to shopping at Aldi, the best time to do so depends on what you want to buy.
For reduced items – when shops open
Red sticker items are rare at Aldi’s 830 UK stores, but the supermarket says that none of its food goes to waste so there are some to be found – if you’re quick.
A spokesman for the supermarket said: “All items are reduced to 50 per cent of the recommend sales price before stores open on their best before or use by dates.”
That means you have the best chance of finding reduced food items if you go into stores as soon as it opens.
Opening times vary by shop but a majority open from 7am or 8am. You can find your nearest store’s times by using the supermarket’s online shop finder tool.
For Specialbuys – Thursdays and Sundays
Specialbuys are Aldi’s weekly collection of items that it doesn’t normally sell, which can range from pizza ovens to power tools.
New stock comes into stores every Thursday and Sunday, so naturally, these are the best days to visit for the best one-off special deals.
For an even better chance of bagging the best items, head there for your local store’s opening time.
You don’t have to head into stores to bag a Specialbuy, though.
They also go on sale online, usually at midnight on Thursday and Sunday, and you can pre-order them up to a week in advance.
As long as you spend at least £25, you’ll get the items delivered for free.
Remember: once they’re gone, they’re gone, so if there’s something you really want, visit as early as possible
