Contraflow to be utilized in Morgan City after fireworks display on July 4th

At the conclusion of the fireworks display, La. 70 (Marguerite Street) will be converted to contraflow at the main gate of the Lake End Park at Fig Street.

MORGAN CITY, La. (KLFY) -- A popular local fireworks show will cause a traffic switch in Morgan City on the evening of Fourth of July, officials said.

At the conclusion of the fireworks display, La. 70 (Marguerite Street) will be converted to contraflow at the main gate of the Lake End Park at Fig Street. The Morgan City Police Department and the Morgan City Fire Department will be positioned throughout the route to guide traffic out of this area in the most efficient way possible.

At 8:45 p.m. all northbound traffic on La. 70 at Veterans Blvd going towards Lake End Park will be shut down.

The Lake Jam will once again be held on the Lake End Parkway, which is the extension near the judges stand, beginning at 3 p.m. on July 4. The parkway boat ramp will be closed during the event to the public. Other boat ramps such as Lake End Park will need to be utilized to access Lake Palourde.

The evening will conclude with the annual 4th of July Fireworks display which will begin at 9 p.m. Due to the large amount of traffic expected that will be congested in this area, Morgan City Police Chief Chad M. Adams and the Morgan City Police Department have developed the plan.

"We want everyone to understand that the fireworks start promptly at 9 p.m., so if you plan on viewing them at the Lake End Park or the Lake End Parkway get there early," Adams said. "If you arrive after the time the road will be closed, you will not be able to access these areas and turned around. This will give appropriate time to clear La. 70 for contraflow to take place."

After the fireworks have concluded, all traffic exiting the Lake End Parkway will exit the assigned gate into the southbound lane of La. 70 coming into Morgan City. If you are heading northbound towards Stephensville, you will be able to do so as contraflow does not begin until the main gate of Lake End Park located on La. 70 at Fig Street.

All traffic exiting the parkway will hold the right lane of travel until past Oschner St. Mary, where you will either be able to continue straight to Sixth Street or turn left on Ninth Street to reach your destination.

All traffic exiting the main gate of the Lake End Park at La. 70 and Fig Street will be directed to the northbound lane (left-hand lane) of travel and head southbound.

"It is important that everyone hold this lane of travel until reaching Victor II Blvd.," Adams said. "Once reaching Victor II Blvd., traffic will be directed to turn left on Victor II and dispersed out to reach their destination. No traffic will be able to utilize Fig Street."

Adams said he and the Morgan City Police Department ask that everyone please be patient and courteous to fellow motorists as they try to clear this area as safely and efficiently as possible. Those attending the festivities should expect delays and plan on an early arrival.
