I tested frozen supermarket pizzas – the 94p winner is better than Goodfellas
PIZZA is the perfect fuss-free dinner for sharing with friends or family.
Everyone should have a couple of pizzas in the freezer they can throw in the oven when needed.
Goodfellas pizzas are often considered to be one of the best frozen brands but all the major supermarkets have their own-label versions.
I tried out six brands and compared the taste and value to Goodfella’s stonebaked thin pepperoni pizza to give an overall rating. Here are the results…
Goodfella’s stone baked thin pepperoni pizza

I can see why Goodfellas is so popular. The pizza was really delicious and the flavour wasn’t too overbearing.
There was a perfect amount of pepperoni covering the base and I liked the cheese to pizza-base ratio. It cooked in about 17 minutes. However, it is more expensive compared to the other options.

Morrisons Stonebaked Pepperoni Pizza

I liked this one but it was a bit bland – and I thought it could have done with some more seasoning or spices to enhance the flavour.
However, it went down well with my daughter who can be fussy.
It cooked evenly in just 14 minutes and was a good size.

Co-op Pepperoni Pizza

I was very impressed with the amount of topping on the offering from my local Co-op – and I thought the pepperoni had a particularly good taste.
Overall the pizza was nicely flavoured and went down well with the family. The good price and speed of cooking make it a quick and easy meal for when cooking feels like too much of a chore.

Sainsbury’s Thin & Crispy Pepperoni Pizza

I was surprised at how good this Sainsbury’s pizza was. Given the price, my expectations were pretty low but it tasted so good.
The pizza is covered with a really generous amount of pepperoni and it didn’t feel as though the flavours were competing against each other.
Although it’s marginally smaller than some of the others I will absolutely buy this again and keep in the freezer for a quick and easy dinner – it’s my hands down winner.

Pepperoni Pizza, Essential Waitrose
- £1.40, 235g
- Per pizza: calories, 714 fat, 32g sugar, 5.2g salt 1.82
This pizza is a good staple to have in, in case you need something quick and easy. However, there wasn’t much pepperoni on it, so you might want to jazz it up by adding some additional toppings.
Be aware that it is smaller, when compared to other brands and I’m not sure it would satisfy more than two people.

Aldi Carlos Classic Crust Pizza
- £2.25, 511g
- Per pizza: calories, 1445 fat, 65g sugar, 17g salt 4.95
Aldi offered the largest pizza at 511g and it could easily serve a bigger family or large group of friends.
The price point seems a bit higher but, you’re getting a lot of pizza for your money, and it could easily feed four.
It took slightly longer to cook at 19 minutes, due to its size.
The base was pretty delicious, especially if lots of dough is your favourite bit. The pepperoni wasn’t as flavoursome as some of the others, however I’d buy this again because of its size and base – and I might add some additional spices to pep it up a tad.

Dr. Oetker Pepperoni-Salame

This well-sized pizza from Dr. Oetker had too many flavours going on for my liking. I’m not sure that you need pepperoni, salami and then so many spices – garlic, onion, rosemary, chilli – all at the same time.
However, if you like a strong taste sensation, this would be the one for you. It cooked really well and I loved the crispy base.
It was one of the most expensive pizzas I tried, and for me, it’s not worth the extra cash.

Asda, Tesco, Lidl also offer frozen pepperoni pizzas but samples were unavailable at the time of producing the article.
How to save on your supermarket shop
THERE are plenty of ways to save on your grocery shop.
You can look out for yellow or red stickers on products, which show when they’ve been reduced.
If the food is fresh, you’ll have to eat it quickly or freeze it for another time.
Making a list should also save you money, as you’ll be less likely to make any rash purchases when you get to the supermarket.
Going own brand can be one easy way to save hundreds of pounds a year on your food bills too.
This means ditching “finest” or “luxury” products and instead going for “own” or value” type of lines.
Plenty of supermarkets run wonky veg and fruit schemes where you can get cheap prices if they’re misshapen or imperfect.
For example, Lidl runs its Waste Not scheme, offering boxes of 5kg of fruit and vegetables for just £1.50.
If you’re on a low income and a parent, you may be able to get up to £442 a year in Healthy Start vouchers to use at the supermarket too.
Plus, many councils offer supermarket vouchers as part of the Household Support Fund.
