‘Is my home’ – Spurs-linked Euro 2024 star plays down summer exit
Euro 2024 has seen a number of players catch the eye with their performances so far in the tournament in Germany.
Nico Williams has performed well for Spain at Euro 2024
Athletic Bilbao winger, Nico Williams is one of those who has attracted plenty of Premier League interest.
The Telegraph revealed back in April that after an impressive La Liga season for the 21-year-old, Tottenham were now ‘among’ the number of Premier League clubs keeping a keen eye on the player for the summer.
Chelsea were one of the teams to most recently convey a serious interest in Williams with the Spaniard being a standout performer in the national team’s impressive start to Euro 2024.
Reports were suggesting that Chelsea were ‘eyeing up’ a move for Williams but perhaps had to secure some transfer fees before an offer was tabled. (The Telegraph)
Fabrizio Romano even cryptically revealed on his YouTube channel a week ago that ‘big English clubs made contact with people close to Nico Williams’, explaining ‘many clubs have moved to understand the situation of Nico Williams’.
Williams appears to be in no rush to leave
Late on Thursday (27/6/24) in an interview with Radio Gaceta, relayed by Fabrizio Romano, Nico Williams himself stated: “I have already said that Bilbao is my home’ when questioned about his future.”
Bilbao has an interesting club policy where only players from the Basque region can represent the club, often causing greater player loyalty and large fees to claw players away from the Spanish side.
Williams then went on to add: “I just renewed recently and I’m very very happy here.”
Spurs Web Opinion
It likely puts an end to chances for teams to pick up Williams this summer after such a clear message of being more than happy to stay put for the next season at Atheltic Bilbao.
Watching Williams this summer has made me even more desperate for Tottenham to sign the player, but as previously mentioned with Bilbao’s club policy and the typical high transfer values to sign their stars, such as Laporte and Griezmann it was always going to be a tricky deal to pull off.
The one positive takeaway from the statement perhaps is that it lessens the chances of other Premier League teams picking up the young winger who looks set to become a top player in the near future.
