Four easy ways to make ice creams and lollies to enjoy as the weather warms up

IF the thought of making your own ice cream and lollies leaves you cold, it’s time to think again.

Forget hours of stirring and chilling to create a flavour, with the ideas below you’ll have home-made treats licked.

FREEZE LEFTOVERS: You really can cut food waste by creating your own ice cream.

Tesco’s brown bread ice cream, at realfood.tesco.com, calls for two slices of stale brown wholemeal bread.

Also on the website, the “banana nice cream” recipe will use up four ripe bananas.

And freeze any mushy strawberries that might usually not be wanted.

When you have enough, use in home-made strawberry ice cream.

EASY VANILLA: Pour 200g sweet condensed milk, 600ml double cream and a teaspoon of vanilla extract into a large bowl.

Beat with an electric whisk until the mixture has thickened and gone quite stiff.

Use a spoon to scrape it into a plastic box or a large loaf tin, cover with cling film and freeze until solid.

You can stir in some crushed cookies for an added bonus.

SIMPLE SWAPS: Swap big brands for supermarket own-label ices to make cool savings.

You can get a 12-pack of Bon Gelati Mini Mix Classics from Lidl for £2.99 with dark chocolate, white chocolate and almond ice creams.

For a ten-pack of mini Magnums in the same flavours, you will pay £6.50 at Tesco.

ICE DREAM MACHINE: You can end up paying up to £400 for a top-of- the range ice cream maker.

And let’s face it, you could buy a lot of 99s for that.

For a cheaper at-home option, the Vonshef stainless steel machine, £39.99 from vonhaus.com, scored highly when tested by experts at Good Housekeeping.

You have to freeze the bowl first, but that is a small price to pay for a delicious home-made treat.
