Rohit Sharma Wakes Up With T20 World Cup Trophy, Wishes ‘Morning Everybody’

Rohit Sharma is the second Indian captain to win a T20 World Cup after MS Dhoni.

New Delhi: India skipper Rohit Sharma woke up with the T20 World Cup 2024 trophy on his bedside the next morning after winning the marquee event. Sharma celebrated his ICC tournament victory in style, spending the night in his Barbados hotel room with the trophy right beside him.

Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from T20I cricket in the press conference after India defeated South Africa in the final of the tournament by seven runs. Rohit followed Virat Kohli’s route in retiring from the T20I format. The Indian skipper was filled with gratitude to win the trophy and felt that he was meant to finish with an ICC World Cup win as he had started his career by winning the T20 World Cup, back in 2007.

Rohit shared the photo of him waking up in his bed beside the T20 World Cup trophy on his Instagram channel.

 

“That was my last game as well. Honestly, I have enjoyed it since the time I started playing this format. There is no better time to say goodbye to this format. I have loved every moment of it. I started my India career playing this format. This is what I wanted to do. win the Cup and say (goodbye,” Rohit said even as the reporters in Barbados urged him to carry on playing the format.

Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma delighted fans by confirming his commitment to continue playing ODIs and Tests, clarifying that only his T20 international career has come to an end.

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma capped their illustrious careers on a high, clinching a World Cup crown for India together for the first time. Kohli earned the Player of the Match award with a spectacular 76 off 59 balls, propelling India to a total of 176 after being sent in to bat first. In a thrilling final, India triumphed over South Africa by 7 runs, securing their second T20 World Cup trophy.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma ended his long wait for a ICC title as captain of the side. Rohit suffered couple of heartbreaks in the last two years. After losing the T20 World Cup semifinal in 2022, India lost the World Test Championship in 2023 and the ODI World Cup at home, losing to Australia on both occasions.

Rohit SHarma finished his T20I career as the all-time highest run getter with 4231 runs. The skipper finished with five hundreds, the most by a batter in T20I cricket. Rohit hit 32 fifties at a strike rate of 140.

Rohit Sharma played an instrumental role in transforming Team India’s mindset in T20I cricket, banishing the fear of failure. Leading from the front in the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rohit was a force to be reckoned with, dominating powerplays and striking fear into the hearts of the opposition. He amassed 257 runs in 8 matches, boasting an impressive strike rate of 156.70.
