I proposed to my man at Buckfast Abbey – we downed a bottle to celebrate, and the ring’s special too

A BUCKFAST-daft couple were on cloud wine – after getting engaged outside the abbey where the tipple is produced.

Holly Broadbent, 26, got down on one knee at the monastery, near Devon, and brought fiance Ash Moon, 41, a personalised bottle of their favourite grape drink.

She said: “Ash introduced me to Buckfast when we first got together.

“I wasn’t keen at first, but now it’s the best thing ever.

“We love to share it together, Ash has loved it for years.

“I knew how much he would love me proposing at Buckfast Abbey.”

The quirky couple met at a festival just before Covid locked down the country and have been inseparable ever since.

And soon after the meeting, trance and techno DJ Ash moved from Blackburn to Wrexham, Wales to be with Holly.

Holly revealed she’d been planning the proposal for months and knew this was the only way she wanted to pop the question.
She said: “If Ash could choose any drink, he’d choose Buckfast.

“I had been planning the trip for a few months and knew I wanted to propose at Buckfast Abbey.

“The ring is pretty unique, I had to order it in advance as it’s a meteorite, dinosaur bone and opal and glows in the dark.

“We had a road trip planned to Cornwall and the Abbey was one of the things he wanted to do.

“When I asked him to marry me, I don’t think he believed it at first.

“I got a personalised bottle with the message ‘Will you marry me’.”And he said ‘Of course I will.”

After the proposal, the happy couple necked a bottle of the notorious booze in the picturesque surroundings of the 11th century abbey.

The couple plan to save the personalised bottle for their wedding night – which they still need to set a date for.

And the tonic wine theme is set to continue on their big day with guests being gifted personalised bottles of the stuff.

Holly also hailed Buckie drinkers north of the border and praised the love Scots have for the drink.

She added: “I’ve heard the massive connection the drink has with Scotland.

“Any time Buckfast is mentioned, Scotland always comes up.”
