Tottenham need to sign a creative influence this summer

The arrival of the Ange Postecoglou era saw a brand of exciting, free-flowing football arrive at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, injuries and suspensions to key players saw their form drop off.

James Maddison was once such player who hit the ground running following his move from Leicester City, only for an ankle injury sustained in the defeat to Chelsea in November to severely impact his season.

Tottenham struggled during the England international’s absence to unlock the opposition defence and even when he returned to action, he did not look to be the same player.

It is hardly surprising that another creative spark appears to be on Tottenham’s transfer shopping list ahead of the new campaign with Crystal Palace’s Eberechi Eze said to be a key target.

It is claimed that Eze’s deal at Selhurst Park contains a £60m release clause with a further £10m in add-ons for the player who is under contract until the summer of 2027 (Daily Mail).

Alasdair Gold has now shared his understanding of Eze’s situation at Crystal Palace and it appears that it may not be a straightforward deal to negotiate, despite the existence of the clause.

Having spoken to numerous people, Gold has revealed that there has been conflicting information on what the clause entails exactly.

He told the Football.London Q&A: “So many people I’ve spoken to in the game over this past week have been told that Palace are making it clear that Eze is not for sale amid Olise’s impending departure, which does throw the spotlight on that release clause.

“That clause is an interesting one because nobody seems to be able to pin down exactly what it consists of, other than a general acceptance that it’s a complicated one. Some have suggested it’s more to do with money up front while not setting a valuation, while others have said that there is a price tag but it’s complicated.

“For me, for Palace to be quite clear to people that Eze isn’t for sale suggests it’s somehow loaded in their favour whatever form it takes. There’s two months left of this window so lots of time left and transfers always take twists and turns, but at this point Palace seem pretty adamant.”

Tottenham do not want to drag their heels on this one if they are serious about bringing Eze to N17.

The later this potential transfer saga could drag on deeper into the window could allow the likes of Manchester City or Arsenal to swoop in and history proves that both clubs have no issue in paying big transfer fees, high above what Tottenham are used to.

Eze is exactly the type of player that Tottenham need to add some further quality to the final third of the pitch with far too much reliance placed on the shoulders of Maddison.
