Long Island man loses hand plus three fingers in firework accident: police

A 66-year-old man was seriously injured after a firework exploded in his front yard in Brentwood, Long Island, causing him to lose his left hand and three fingers on his right hand.

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A man was seriously injured after a firework incident on Long Island Saturday night, according to police.

Barry Nelson, 66, was in his front yard on Eastern Avenue in Brentwood when police said a firework exploded around 9 p.m. The firework severed his left hand and three fingers on his right hand, according to police.

Nelson was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries, according to officials.
