Report: Real Madrid enter race to sign £42m star wanted by Tottenham
Tottenham’s pursuit of Riccardo Calafiori might have just got a lot harder as La Gazzetta dello Sport have now revealed that Real Madrid are now eyeing a move for the Bologna star.
Real Madrid enter the race for Riccardo Calafiori
The report names Juventus, Spurs and Arsenal as the clubs who had previously shown interest in Calafiori but is said that the Old Lady are now growing concerned as the race for the 22-year-old’s signature heats up.
The latest club to enter the picture are Los Blancos, who have allegedly identified the Italian as a potential replacement for Nacho Fernandez and have kept a close eye on his performances at the Euros.
The outlet adds that Bologna’s asking price has risen from €40m (£34m) to €50m (£42m) and the Serie A side are refusing to lower their demands since the player’s former club, Basel, have a 40% sell-on clause.
The race is heating up for Calafiori
It is alleged that while the likes of Spurs and Arsenal might be prepared to pay that asking price, it may be too high for the Bianconeri.
The publication adds that Bologna are expected to bide their time and encourage as many offers as possible for Calafiori.
The centre-back remains on duty with Italy at the European Championships this summer, with his side having qualified for the quarter-finals with a win over Switzerland.
Spurs Web Opinion
I cannot see Tottenham spending over £40m on another centre-back this summer, given the fact that additions in other areas are much bigger priorities.
I fully expect Spurs to withdraw from the race for the Calafiori as a bidding war emerges between several top sides across Europe.
