Report: Spurs want to sell player for £20m and reinvest in a youngster with ‘potential’
Emerson Royal appears to be on his way out of Spurs, with Postecoglou wanting to bring in a younger right back who can develop under the Australian over the long term.
Spurs want a young right-back with potential
At the start of June, reports of AC Milan being strongly interested in Spurs right-back, Emerson Royal, ramped up with Gazzetta revealing that the Brazilian, who has made just over 100 appearances in Lilywhite, was Milan’s ‘main’ right-back target signing this summer.
It didn’t take long for the player himself to catch wind of AC Milan’s interest, who are now under the stewardship of former Spurs managerial target, Paulo Fonseca.
Emerson admitted to Andre Hernan on his YouTube channel that ‘I know Milan are in contact with Tottenham’. Emerson continued in the interview to state, ‘knowing teams like this [Milan] are following me makes me very happy’.
Third choice right back, Djed Spence, is also returning from his loan at Genoa and despite his six months in Italy going better than his time in Leeds, Tottenham are still looking for a buyer as Football.London confirmed the player is ‘unwanted’ by Postecoglou.
Spurs favour signing a young full-back over keeping Emerson
Although, according to Football Insider Daniel Levy and Tottenham ‘rejected an offer from Al Nassr in January’, the club are now willing to part ways with Emerson this summer.
The reported fee that Spurs are holding out for is ‘in the region of £20 million’ which would see Tottenham almost fully recoup the £21.2 million they expended to lure the full-back from Barcelona back in 2021.
Football Insider claims the fee received for Emerson would be utilised to ‘sign a young right-back who has the potential to develop under Ange Postecoglou’.
A potential suitor for that role could be Archie Gray, who has operated at right-back and central midfield for Leeds United last season at just 18 with Tottenham being reported to now be ‘in talks’ to sign the breakout star. (The Athletic)

Reinvesting the money that would be received as a result of Emerson’s sale makes complete sense to me. Emerson has been given plenty of chances under Ange Postecoglou with it now becoming apparent that the Australian clearly entrusts Pedro Porro overwhelmingly in contrast to the Brazilian.
With Postecoglou’s right backs also performing a very specific inverted role in his system, it is key that he has players at his disposal that he believes can be brought in and perform the role with little issues, Emerson is clearly a player who struggles to do that.
Bringing in a young, hungry right back would likely mean that the player is more likely to adapt quicker and absorb Postecoglou’s instruction, allowing the Australian to mould the player into one that fits into his system and ideas.
