How rare marking on your 50p coin could make it 4,000 times more valuable – do you have one in your change?

An ultra-rare 50p coin could be worth 4,000 times its face value due to an unusual marking – and you could have one in your pocket.

A TikToker took to the social media platform to share his crucial tips on scoring it big with coin collections.

Tiktoker shares how you can sell rare 50p coins for four thousand times their value
@Coincollectingwizard shows three coins that could be worth more than their value

According to @CoinCollectingWizard, there are three coins in particular that could fetch you a tidy sum, with one coin worth a whopping £2,000.

The 2017 Benjamin Button 50p

Starting out with the 2017 Benjamin Button, this seemingly ordinary coin could be worth “serious money” if “you have the rare rotation error version”.

Typically, the Queen‘s head on a coin should face left when flipped over.

However, due to a minting error, some coins have the Queen’s head facing in the wrong direction.

He said: “This is usually just worth face value unless you have a rare rotation error version. The error version of the coin has the Queen’s head printed facing the wrong direction”.

If you find one of these, you could pocket around £30 – 60 times its original value.

The 2009 Athletics 50p

Released in larger quantities in 2011, the Athletics 50p coin saw approximately 2.2 million copies enter circulation.

But here’s the catch: an earlier version was “minted in 2009, and it’s significantly more valuable to collectors”.

A 2009 edition of this coin could mean a payday of £250 or more.

The TikTok coin collector said: “If you have this coin dated 2009, then you’ve hit jackpot. It can sell for £250 plus” – that’s 500 times its original value.

The 2011 Aquatics 50p Error Coin

In his final example, he shares the most lucrative coin yet.

This coin holds a small but crucial error that makes it ultra-rare, meaning you can bank 4000 times its original value.

He said:  “If you find one with the swimming lines over the face, it could be worth a small fortune.

“A small handful of this original design entered circulation, but it was then adapted quickly to show the face above the water.”

The 2011 Aquatics 50p originally depicted the swimmer’s face submerged underwater.

Due to a quick design modification, only a handful of these coins made it into circulation before the design was changed to show the swimmer’s face above water.

This rarity factor has driven up the coin’s value to an astonishing £2,000.

TikTok has been buzzing with excitement over @CoinCollectingWizard’s revelations, with hundreds of fans sharing their own experiences and aspirations for coin collecting success.

One lucky user enthusiastically commented, “I’ve got all three of them”, highlighting the widespread appeal and potential profitability of these rare finds.

So, next time you’re counting loose change, remember to keep an eye out for these hidden treasures.

It’s not just 50ps collectors need to watch out for, take a look at the rarest 2p coins currently in circulation, that can be worth as much as £900.

Elsewhere, one lucky collector scored a hefty £30,000 on his coin because of an unusual design – is there one in your wallet?
