The presidential candidate debate between President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump on Thursday, June 27 left Americans more confused than ever. Joe Biden didn’t have the best performance of his career, but he’s also up against a former president who has been criminally convicted on 34 felony counts of falsified business records. While many Democrats were disappointed by their candidate’s weak show, there’s one person who is fiercely protective of Joe Biden — and that would be his wife, First Lady Dr. Jill Biden.

Ahead of last week’s debate, Jill was interviewed by Vogue, and she pressed on about the “urgency” of this year’s vote. “Every campaign is important, and every campaign is hard,” she explained. “Each campaign is unique. But this one, the urgency is different. We know what’s at stake. Joe is asking the American people to come together to draw a line in the sand against all this vitriol.” With women’s reproductive rights narrowing in some states, future Supreme Court spots on the line, and the blurry line between religion and education in some school systems, the first lady has a right to be worried.

Katie Rogers, White House correspondent for The New York Times and author of American Woman: The Transformation of the Modern First Lady, From Hillary Clinton to Jill Biden, described Jill as not only one of Joe Biden’s “key advisers,” but also “his gut check and his closest confidant.” She believes he’s the right man for the job. “And she really believes in her husband’s ability to get things done for the American people—whether they’re his supporters or not. That’s why she’s fighting so hard for him to get a second term because there are things they’ve got left on the agenda,” Rogers added. “And she’s told me she’ll travel twice as much, and fight twice as hard, because of the threats she sees—especially to women.”

While Joe Biden’s less-than-dazzling moment on the stage with Donald Trump left many people unsettled, Jill had a few additional thoughts to share with Vogue after the event that might calm a few nerves. While noting that her husband “will always do what’s best for the country,” she refuses to “let those 90 minutes define the four years he’s been president.” They will “continue to fight” with the election still four months away.

CNN sources divulged that his entire family is offering their “unequivocal support” and indicated that there might be senior staffing changes ahead of the election. So, Joe Biden might be down, but he’s not out, according to Jill, who believes he has another chapter in Washington, D.C.
