Ford Capri that featured in much-loved TV show & ‘considered an icon throughout motoring circles’ hits auction

A VERY rare Ford Capri that’s widely considered an icon among petrolheads is set to hit auction.

This extra special example, known as a ‘Comanche’ Capri, was specially developed by a racing icon – and it even appeared in a hit TV show.

Currently available to buy from the auction website Cars & Classic, this 1971 Ford Capri 3000 GT XLR was once finely tweaked by Jeff Uren of Race Proven LTD.

A legendary racer with a deep affiliation with Ford, John formed Race Proven LTD to tune Fords and turn them into pure performance animals “without compromising on the Ford quintessential usability and practicality.”

The Capri is already a hit among car fanatics – with the listing describing the model as an “all time great” that’s considered “an icon throughout motoring circles.”

But this iteration is “as rare as Ford’s go” and the listing says it’s “sure to cause a stir” among Ford enthusiasts.

The listing added: “This desirable pre facelift MK1 Capri has been lovingly touched with the Race Proven brush and turned into the top flight variant of the Comanche, with power sent from the dwindling 128 standard horsepower up to a fierce 190 the 3.0 litre Essex V6 nestled under the bonnet was now a proper performance piece.

“Other upgrades included upgraded suspension, a Kenlowe fan and engine balance turning this Capri into a true animal.

As rare as Ford’s go, this one does take some beating, and is sure to cause a stir amongst enthusiasts of the blue oval.

“Finished in a striking Maize Yellow paintwork, it’s a rather well preserved example and surely one of the finest early Capris out there, almost certainly it may be the best and only genuine Comanche we see on the market for some time.

“As rare as Ford’s go, this one does take some beating, and is sure to cause a stir amongst enthusiasts of the blue oval.”

Better yet, this exact motor has had a taste of the spotlight, having featured on the BBC programme The Cars The Star in 1997 with former Top Gear host Quentin Wilson.

At the time of writing, it has seven days to go before the auction finishes – with the current bid stuck at £16,000.

The Capri is one of Ford’s best-selling models ever, with over 1.9 million distributed in a near 20-year production run from 1968 to 1986.

Recently, it was revealed the Capri name is set to make a return, with new teaser images released last week ahead of an unveiling on July 10.
