Triple-digit heat likely around Portland metro this week

Now's the time to prepare for some of the hottest summer temperatures seen this year around the Portland, Vancouver metro area.

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Now's the time to prepare for a potential heat wave as the forecast predicts some of the hottest summer temperatures seen this year so far around the Portland and Vancouver metro areas.

Triple-digit heat is likely for the first weekend in July and comes off the heels of the Fourth of July holiday. This latest potential heat wave is expected to be the hottest and longest-lasting stretch of summer-like conditions seen in the Pacific Northwest so far this year. Records could potentially fall by Saturday as the mercury climbs to the triple digit mark.

KOIN 6 Meteorologist Josh Cozart expects this week's heat to be the hottest Portland has seen so far this summer

The peak of the heat will likely fall on Saturday, where the current record of 97-degrees set in 1960 is expected to melt away. A forecast high of 100 degrees will likely become the new record for July 6. This round of excessive heat also falls during Portland's Waterfront Blues Festival.

KOIN 6 Weather Alerts in place from Friday to Sunday this week as Portland prepares for dangerous heat

The hottest point of this latest round of warmth will occur during the middle of the Blues Festival, but the Fourth of July will also be warmer than normal. Typically, temperatures sit in the upper 70s to low 80s for the Fourth of July around Portland. However, temperatures in the 90s are not out of the question. It was just last year when Portland recorded temperatures in the mid-90s on the Fourth of July.

Extreme caution should be practiced for those spending time outdoors during this latest heat wave. Staying hydrated, wearing light-colored and loose-fitting clothing while taking frequent breaks indoors or in the shade is a must. Know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke and check on those who might not have access to cooler locations.
