Our neighbour’s rusty old abandoned car is ‘melting into the ground’ in our parking space… there’s NOTHING we can do

A HOMEOWNER has hit out at their neighbour for leaving a rusty old abandoned car ‘melting into the ground’ in a communal parking space.

The fuming resident said that the eyesore motor was “bringing the place down” but was stumped on how to get rid of it.

Sharing their fury on Reddit, they explained that residents parking is allowed on the road leading up to their semi-detached property, with bays being shared with other houses in the area.

They wrote: “There are no driveways but allocated spaces as per title deeds for each property and then a few spare spaces for turning purposes and visitor parking.

“There is a neighbour who has left a Land Rover in a spare space for over 6 years now.

“It is literally melting into the ground.

It’s literally this one property that is bringing the whole place down

“We have lived here for 1 year, and after speaking to other residents they have been trying forever to get the Land Rover removed but it falls on deaf ears.”

They added that the neighbour uses their reserved space for a work vehicle, while the abandoned one has been registered SORN.

And apparently, this wasn’t even the first time the issue had been raised, with a previous motor being left for an extended period.

The post’s author added: “This is the second time they have abandoned a vehicle.

“Apparently the last one sat and rotted into the ground for over 5 years before they removed it.

“The vehicle is the landlord’s [but he] ignores all correspondence.”

“We are all just fed up and trying to get the street looking nice, as the other properties all share a communal vibe, we all help around the grounds.

“It’s literally this one property that is bringing the whole place down.”

The homeowner then asked other Reddit users to give legal advice on potential action, though none have yet commented.

What can I do if there's an abandoned car on my street?

If you find an abandoned car on your street you can report it to your local council.

This can be done if the vehicle has sustained damage or if its blocking your driveway, which may be a matter for the police.

Abandoning a car is a criminal offence similar to fly-tipping and can result in a fine of up to £2,500.

However, if the vehicle is not causing a nuisance beyond looking unsightly, you can report it to the DVLA if it’s on a private road.

The agency may then be able to contact the owner and instruct them on what to do next.

If the car is on private land, though, there is relatively little that can be done unless it presents a health and safety risk, in which case the council will contact the owner.

As a rule of thumb, councils recommend considering a car abandoned if it has been in the same spot and left untouched for more than four weeks.
