Troy officials announce crackdown on illegal fireworks

The enforcement is expected to continue throughout the summer.

TROY, N.Y. (NEWS10) -- Troy Mayor Carmella Mantello and Troy Police Chief Daniel DeWolf announced on Tuesday that police and city officials will be increasing enforcement against the use of illegal fireworks ahead of Fourth of July celebrations this week. The enforcement is expected to continue throughout the summer.

The city's administration issued a notice to residents stating that only certain types of fireworks are legal to use in the County. Permitted fireworks include handheld sparklers and ground-based fireworks that emit sparks, whistling noises, audible crackling and smoke.

Fireworks that launch into the air are illegal in New York. Officials remind citizens that illegal fireworks pose fire and safety hazards, and can disturb both neighbors and local animals. Several local counties have banned all fireworks. The law that permits certain fireworks in New York allowed counties to opt out of allowing any fireworks.

Members of the community are encouraged to attend professional displays. Anyone with issues or concerns regarding the use of illegal fireworks can contact Troy Police at (518)270-4411, or 9-1-1 in the case of an emergency.
