2024 Emmy Experts predict Best Drama Guest Actress: Claire Foy (‘The Crown’) will win 3rd trophy

Having trouble predicting who will win Best Drama Guest Actress at the upcoming Emmy Awards? Let’s consult Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy Experts! These savvy pundits from major media outlets have chimed in with their predictions, and the majority of them believe the trophy will go to Claire Foy (“The Crown”). The other potential nominees, per the Experts’ current racetrack odds, are Yuko Miyamoto (“Shōgun”), Michaela Coel (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”), Sarah Paulson (“Mr. and Mrs. Smith”) and Marcia Gay Harden (“The Morning Show”).

As of this writing, a leading 11 out of our 13 Emmy Experts predict a victory for Foy: Ben Travers (Indiewire), Christopher Rosen (Gold Derby), Clayton Davis (Variety), Dave Nemetz (TV Line), Jazz Tangcay (Variety), Joyce Eng (Gold Derby), Matt Roush (TV Guide Magazine), Ray Richmond (Gold Derby), Shawn Edwards (WDAF-TV Fox), Susan King (Gold Derby) and Susan Wloszczyna (Gold Derby). She is the original Queen Elizabeth II on “The Crown,” who reappeared in the series finale alongside the latter two portrayers, Olivia Colman and Imelda Staunton. Foy already has two Emmys on her mantel for this iconic role: lead in 2018 and guest in 2021.

Another Emmyologist — Peter Travers (ABC) — instead believes Miyamoto will prevail for “Shōgun.” She takes on the role of Gin, the madam of the teahouse brothel, on FX’s big budget drama. This would be the first major award for the Japanese actress, whose other credits include “Rain Fall,” “City of Life and Death” and “The Momotaroh.”

The remaining pundit — Eric Deggans (NPR) — is forecasting a triumph for Coel for “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” She dives into the character of Bev, the apparent new girlfriend of John (Donald Glover), who is actually a spy for a rival company. Coel won an Emmy for writing the limited series “I May Destroy You” (2021), for which she was also nominated for acting, directing and producing.

Also looking strong in our Experts’ rankings is Paulson for “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” She plays the unnamed couples therapist for John and Jane (Maya Erskine), who rubs them the wrong way when she reveals she’s been recording their sessions. Paulson is halfway to EGOT, winning the Emmy for “The People v. O.J. Simpson” and the Tony for “Appropriate.”

Some of the most recent Emmy winners in the Best Drama Guest Actress category include Storm Reid (“The Last of Us”) in 2023, Lee Yoo-mi (“Squid Game”) in 2022, Foy in 2021, Cherry Jones (“Succession”) in 2020, and Cherry Jones (“The Handmaid’s Tale”) for 2019. Find out who will be in the running to join this esteemed list when the Primetime Emmy nominations are announced on July 17, 2024.
