Officer "doing well" after being shot in NW OKC, prompting deadly standoff

An Oklahoma City police officer who was shot in an incident that sparked an hours-long standoff on Tuesday morning is expected to survive.

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) – An Oklahoma City police officer who was shot in an incident that sparked an hours-long standoff on Tuesday morning is expected to survive.

“The officer underwent surgery and is doing well at this time,” said Captain Valerie Littlejohn, who said the department was not releasing the officer’s name yet.

The incident began after Littlejohn said 911 was called about a man holding a gun to a person’s head. The man reportedly fired shots at police when they arrived, hitting the officer in the lower stomach.

"We've got an officer hit. We're going to be en route to OU," said one officer over police radio.

The injured officer was loaded into a patrol unit instead of waiting for an ambulance and rushed to OU Health’s Trauma Center.

"Let OU know we're coming!" said one officer over radio.

Outside OU Health, a line of law enforcement with lights flashing waited for word on their fellow patrolman. News 4 witnessed several law enforcement comforting and hugging each other.

The patrol unit, believed to be the SUV used to transport the shot officer, was parked outside the entrance. Investigators were seen snapping photos of the inside, along with the guns and gear left in the vehicle.

Evidence was collected and the windows and seats were wiped down before another officer drove the car off the property. Crime Scene Unit investigators logged and loaded the evidence into the back of the truck and drove off as well.

Back at the scene, neighbors reacted to the news of what was unfolding on their street.

“It shocked the hell out of me for our police to get shot,” said Lamont Overstreet, who lives nearby. “When somebody told me the police got shot, it's like, Oh, my God."

Oklahoma City Police said they would release the name of the wounded officer in the coming days.
