Surprise sinkhole appears on golf course in Watonga

The golf course at Roman Nose State Park is now home to a sinkhole.

WATONGA, Okla. (KFOR) — The golf course at Roman Nose State Park is now home to a sinkhole.

It's unclear where it starts and where it could lead.

The team from the Oklahoma Geological Survey came out to diagnose the hole and are confident they can discover its path, while allowing golfers to stay on other parts of the course.

“Pretty much we just take a look at it, see if there's any other places there could be a collapse, and then we’ll do some mitigation,” geologist Kevin Blackwood says.

The Oklahoma weather played a big part in how the hole was formed; our wet spring likely contributed to the hole's collapse.

While the sinkhole is a not a safety hazard to anyone, Chase Horn, the Director of Communications at Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation, tells News 4 their main goal is to keep everyone safe, and are relying on experts to get it fixed.

Kevin and his team will continue to monitor the hole and hope to get it fixed soon.
