Local nonprofit Pivot, OKDHS partner to open new tiny homes for at-risk youth

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) — OKC-based nonprofit Pivot is hosting an open house on July 12 to unveil their new tiny homes and community center for youth facing housing insecurity.

"No matter the situation a young person finds themselves in, Pivot is here to support them during times of transition and to help them gain experiences needed to become self-reliant adults," said Pivot President and CEO, Jennifer Goodrich. “All young people have talents, skills and dreams, and we are always looking for how we can bring hope to those dreams.”

The 15 new homes and the community center were built in partnership with Oklahoma Human Services, who awarded Pivot a grant focused on sheltering youth who aged out of foster care.

The newly-built homes are phase two of their tiny home project. Pivot broke ground on the first tiny homes in 2018, funded by a grant from Impact Oklahoma.

“We are incredibly excited about our newest partnership with Pivot and the opportunity to find additional ways to meet the housing needs of young people who are leaving the foster care system,” said Dr. Deborah Shropshire, Director of Oklahoma Human Services. “The tiny homes and community center will give young people much needed stability and support while they work with our Oklahoma Successful Adulthood Program to implement longer-term housing plans and design their own future. We are grateful for the many ways the community has embraced foster care and for the additional pathways this partnership will create for the young people we serve.”

Pivot's tiny home open house will go from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, July 12, at 201 NE 50th Street in Oklahoma City.
