Tips to keep pets cool amid Portland heat wave

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — With severe temperatures looming over the Rose City, it’s important for Portlanders to keep their pets cool.

The National Weather Service’s Portland office issued an Excessive Heat Warning that lasts from Thursday at noon to Sunday at 11 p.m. KOIN 6 Meteorologist Kelley Bayern estimated triple-digit temperatures through the weekend, prompting “dangerously hot conditions” for locals and their animal companions.

Oregon Humane Society spokesperson Laura Klink told KOIN 6 it’s essential for pet owners to monitor their furry friends over the next few days.

“Our pets don't know how to self-regulate themselves,” Klink said. “Sometimes we are their advocates. They rely on us to make those decisions and make sure that they're safe and well cared for.”

She added that animal heat risks are dependent on factors like age, pre-existing health conditions or even their head type. Short-nosed, brachycephalic dogs — like French bulldogs, shih tzus and pugs — find it especially difficult to regulate their internal temperature.

External temperatures can also be affected, with dog’s paw pads being extra sensitive to hot conditions. Klink said the general rule of thumb is to place your thumb on the hot pavement for five seconds to test whether it is too hot for an animal.

She emphasized people should ensure pets have access to a cool spot, clean water and maybe a wet towel, especially if they are excessively panting or appear to be confused.

“If a pet seems like they have stopped panting or stop drooling, that could be a medical emergency and that's the time to seek emergency care,” she said.

In addition to the high temperatures, loud noises could be another hindrance to dogs this week due to fireworks. Many cities ban personal fireworks, but Portland leaders have permitted a few professional displays — and pets typically aren’t happy about them.

Klink advises to err on the side of caution by keeping animals inside. When panicked, she said cats could bust through a window screen or scale a fence.
