David Domoney, a TV Gardener, Author and Chartered Horticulturist, took to social media to share his top tip for a slug and snail free garden this summer.

Posting online, David revealed that you probably already have the secret at home – and it’s most likely lurking in your food bin.

He explained that you won’t have to fork out on pricey products with this hack, and therefore, described it as a great way to “save a bit of money at the same time”.

He shared: “The secret is saving your egg shells – so when you finish your souffles, your Saturday morning breakfast fry up or even you’ve been baking the cakes – don’t throw the egg shells away, collect them up.”

David highlighted: “The next thing about eggshells is they’ve got a sort of little inner coating and what you want to do is to be able to dry that up, it’s a little membrane just inside, and the best way to dry them is to put them in the oven.

“You can leave them in there for about 10 minutes, if you’ve got an air cooker, you can put them in there for 10 to 15 minutes, or even in a microwave, you can put them in for about five minutes.”

The gardening pro then advised gardeners to crush up the eggshells finely, and sprinkle them around your plants.

He continued: “Slugs and snails don’t like crawling over sharp objects, and the sharpness of the shell, although it doesn’t affect us, is very deterring for those slugs.

“So the secret is, before they start getting out there, collect up your eggshells so you’ve got plenty of material to sprinkle around your plants and protect them against slugs and snails.”

The TikTok clip, which was posted under the username @daviddomoney, has clearly left many open-mouthed, as it has quickly amassed 86,200 views.

Social media users were thankful for David’s advice and many took to the comments to express this.

One person said: “Great advice!”

Keep pests out all summer

IF you want to ensure that your home is pest free this summer, here's what you need to know.

Hornets and wasps – hate the smell of peppermint oil so spraying this liberally around your patio or balcony can help to keep them at bay.

Moths – acidic household white vinegar is effective for deterring moths. Soak some kitchen roll in vinegar and leave it in your wardrobe as a deterrent.

Flying ants – herbs and spices, such as cinnamon, mint, chilli pepper, black pepper, cayenne pepper, cloves, or garlic act as deterrents.

Mosquitoes – plants, herbs and essential oil fragrances can help deter mozzies inside and out. Try eucalyptus, lavender and lemongrass.

Another added: “Brilliant tip, thank you.”

A third commented: “Thanks for the advice.”

At the same time, someone else commented: “I don’t waste my time with drying them in an oven.

“I just crush them up and put them in the garden and it works just fine.”
