The & symbol used to be the 27th letter

We’ve all had it drilled into our heads from the beginning of primary school that the alphabet starts with ABC and ends in Z, but one TikToker has now thrown this into question.

Sharing the revelation to his followers, Zach said that the 27th letter of the alphabet is Ampersand.

Ampersand is the name given to the & symbol.

Zach said: “Believe it or not, this used to be the 27th letter of the alphabet”.

Explaining further, he said that “back in the day”, the symbol came after the letter Z.

However, he revealed that students weren’t allowed to just say “and” after Z.

Instead, they were taught to differentiate the symbol by saying “and per se and”.

“It sounded something like this”, he explained.

“QRSTUVWXYZ and per se &”.

When reciting this phrase quickly, it sounds like you are saying “Ampersand”, which is where the name comes from.

Zach’s revelation, which was posted under the username @zachdfilms3, has likely left many in shock, as it has racked up over 971,000 views on the video sharing platform.

TikTok users raced to the video’s comments section to share their thoughts.

One person said: “Ampersand is actually pretty cool”.

Another person said: “The Ampersand symbol is actually a combination of the letters “et” (you can sort of see it: &) because that’s Latin for ‘and’.”

More things people are only just realising...

A third person said: “The ‘and’ sign has a name????”

A fourth added: “They should’ve put & before Z and after Y!”.
