England vs Switzerland preview
More thrills, spills and headaches are expected as England take to quarter-final action in Dusseldorf on Saturday.
And it’s against their toughest opponents yet in Switzerland, who have enjoyed a tremendous campaign under manager Murat Yakin.
Having entered the tournament as hot favourites to clinch their first major trophy since 1966, England have been uninspiring to say the least.
Though possessing a squad bristling with superstars, the Three Lions scraped to the top of Group C before a remarkable Jude Bellingham overhead kick helped salvaged victory against Slovakia.
Gareth Southgate’s side now have three draws and one victory at these Euros against sides ranked 32nd, 21st, 57th and 45th in FIFA’s rankings.
Well-drilled Switzerland, meanwhile, produced a masterclass to dump holders Italy out of the competition in the previous round.
The Swiss have beaten Italy, Hungary, and were unfortunate not to have sealed a 1-0 over hosts Germany during the group stages.
However, history is on England’s side with Switzerland having been eliminated at this stage in all four of their previous attempts. They’ve also won only once in their last 24 meetings against the Three Lions.

If scoring against Slovakia was tough – it looks like mission impossible against a very impressive Switzerland outfit.
England only managed one shot on target throughout that torturous last-16 clash last weekend, and that was against a Slovakia who gave up a combined 15 shots on target in their previous three matches.
Switzerland, meanwhile, have given up just nine shots on target at Euro 2024, which ranks as the joint-fewest in the tournament.

Winners
Murat Yakin’s side have also been mightily clinical in front of goal with the vastly experienced Granit Xhaka and Remo Freuler pulling the strings in midfield.
Their conversion rate is the best in the tournament, while only Spain, Germany and Portugal have registered more efforts on target of the sides left in the tournament.
Weaknesses were laid bare against Slovakia with the underdogs producing an xG of 2.09 in addition to 13 attempts at goal. The absence of Marc Guehi will also upset an already makeshift defence.

Score or assist
Ruben Vargas could make a big impact on Saturday.
The 25-year-old Augsburg star scored and provided an assist against Italy last time out, and has another four goal contributions in his previous nine international appearances (two goals, two assists).
