My obsessive-compulsive disorder is taking over my life

DEAR DEIDRE: Every time I leave my house, I have to religiously and repeatedly check that all my lights, appliances, and radiators are off.

No matter how hard I try I can’t stop myself from obsessing and it’s taking over my life.

I’m a 47-year-old married woman, with three children and I’ve been checking things for as long as I can remember.

Every time I leave the house I’m constantly worried and on edge. The only thing that gives me peace is by checking everything, at least three or four times.

Over the years I’ve tried to get over it, but I cannot control my anxious thoughts and I’m haunted by the fear that my house will burn down.

My whole day is dominated by these thoughts – I also have to religiously check that I have everything in my bag and that the windows and doors are closed and locked.

Every day is a constant struggle and I find it impossible to be out of the house for more than a couple of hours at a time.

I can’t remember the last time I managed to go away or have a holiday.

My husband has tried his best to support me but my anxiety is deteriorating and it’s making my life a misery.

All I want is to overcome this, but I’m worried I won’t ever be able to change.

Please help.

DEIDRE SAYS: I’m sorry to hear that you’re struggling and I can only imagine how mentally exhausting this must be for you.

However, this behaviour, obsessively checking things, sounds very much like a type of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

This has impacted your life for too long. But help is available. My support packs on Overcoming Obsessions and Living With Anxiety will tell you who to contact.
