Andy was not fit enough for the singles – pulling out on Tuesday morning – but entered the doubles with Jamie and the mixed with Emma Raducanu as he bids farewell to Wimbledon ahead of his upcoming retirement.

After all, he did have surgery on his back to remove a spinal cyst just 12 days ago.

But he took to Centre Court up against Aussie pair John Peers and Rinky Hijikata – cheered on by mum Judy, wife Kim and daughters Sophia and Evie.

A tight first set went to a tie-break with Murray and Murray unable to convert their set point before Hijikata came up with the goods when it mattered most.

The Scottish pair made the perfect start to the second, breaking immediately – but were pegged straight back.

A terrible game at 3-3 from Jamie – including two double faults – gifted Peers and Hijikata the all-important break.

Andy served to stay in it – and held.

And it was over to the Aussies to serve it out.

A nervy double fault started the game but they rattled off the next four points, sealing it with a volley that drops inside the baseline – and almost poetically the two-time singles champion cannot get to it in time.

Then it was time for the ceremony.

British players, Novak Djokovic and John McEnroe were among those to come on to court before the wonderful return of Sue Barker to take the microphone.

A video tribute had Jamie, Judy and Kim in tears before an emotional Andy and Sue chatted on the grass.
