It’s America’s birthday, which means legions of patriots will douse their hot dogs in relish, drape American flags upon their shoulders, and throw back six-packs of Bud Light Thursday in the name of our founding fathers. Will they also reckon with our nation’s sordid history of the whiteness, colonization, and oppression that are all but baked into the occasion? Probably not, no! That would ruin the fun.
Speaking of fun, hopefully you’re already clocked out of work and heading to your weekend destination where aperol spritzes and hamburgers grilled by Muscle Guys await. Celebrities, for their part, have already kicked off their own holiday activities which seem to include the usual Americana fare: tennis, neon green lawns, and lots of gingham. On Wednesday, Reese Witherspoon posted photos from a pickleball court, wearing a matching ensemble with her niece Draper, so I’m sure she’ll be continuing the outdoorsy theme with her family over the long weekend. Per the Daily Mail, former Real Housewives of New York star Bethenny Frankel was spotted spending some time at her second home in the Hamptons, because what could be more American than summer-ing upstate? Oh, and Sylvester Stallone used the opportunity to post a black-and-white image of his wife and three daughters transposed beneath an American flag. Aside from showcasing his stellar Photoshop skills, the actor wrote that he’s “grateful for [his] family, freedom, and fireworks.” Cute!
