Delhi: Lionel Messi is arguably the best footballer on the planet, if not ‘the’ best. Messi is a popular footballer who enjoys a massive fanbase. While some consider him to be a demi-god, it is rare to see him miss a penalty. But again, he did squander a penalty against Ecuador in a Copa America match on Thursday.

Despite Messi’s miss, Argentina managed to secure a 4-2 (1-1) win a penalty shootout to advance to the semi-final. Messi looked distraught and in shock after missing the penalty. Messi missed the opening penalty, chipping against the bar. In fact, Messi was the only Argentine to miss a penalty during the shootout.

Earlier, Messi was rested for Saturday’s 2-0 win over Peru in Miami, as part of nine changes made by coach Lionel Scaloni but returns to the starting line-up for the last-eight clash at NRG Stadium.

Lautaro Martinez, the top scorer in the tournament so far with four goals from three games, retains his place in attack at the expense of Julian Alvarez.

Scaloni has reverted to the midfield and defence he used in the line-up against Chile in the penultimate group stage game which the world champions won 1-0.

Argentina will now play either Venezuela or Canada in the semifinal in New Jersey. That would be an interesting clash.
