Crews battle vegetation fires in San Jose on Fourth of July

One of the blazes consumed 2 acres after breaking out in a vacant lot near State Street and Pacific Avenue.

SAN JOSE – Firefighters were dispatched to a pair of vegetation fires Thursday night in San Jose.

The first fire was reported around 8:40 p.m. in a vacant lot near State Street and Pacific Avenue, according to the San Jose Fire Department. Crews contained the fire to two acres.

No injuries were reported.

Traffic was impacted by the incident and authorities asked people to avoid the area.

A second vegetation fire was reported just before 10 p.m. in the 800 block of Foothill Court, east of Almaden Lake Park. No structures were threatened, but traffic was impacted on Coleman Avenue, between Almaden Expressway and Santa Teresa Boulevard.

Elsewhere in Northern California, crews worked to get the Thompson Fire under control. The 3,789-acre blaze in the Oroville Dam area has led to the evacuation of 28,000 people.

Crews also had their hands full with the French Fire in Mariposa. The blaze had burned 400 acres and was 0% contained as of late Thursday, according to Cal Fire.
