Heathrow Airport has been plunged into chaos after Terminal 2 was evacuated because of an emergency incident.

Passengers said there was ‘pandemonium’ with people ‘running all over the place’ after emergency services asked everyone to leave the terminal.

Footage showed huge crowds of people packing out London’s busiest airport after the Met Police was called to reports of a ‘suspicious item’.

Some holidaymakers, who claimed there was a ‘crush’ when the terminal reopened, feared they would miss their flights.

It comes as hundreds of England fans are attempting to make it to Dusseldorf in Germany for the Euro 2024 quarter-final clash with Switzerland tomorrow.

Mark Pusey was at the airport and due to be travelling out for the game, but is worried he will now miss his connecting flight from Frankfurt.

‘They shut the terminal and nobody will tell us why,’ the 44-year-old, from west London, said earlier.

‘It is pandemonium in some of the terminals – people are running all over the place.

‘There is just a complete lack of information. Nobody has said anything. Every time I ask staff a question they reply with “I can’t tell you”.

‘It is chaos – lots of people are running around. There was one guy who was happy to lose his bag and try to make his flight than wait around and potentially miss it.’

Heathrow said in a statement the incident has now been resolved, but opening the terminal seemed to cause even more chaos, Mark said.

He added: ‘When they finally opened the terminal up there was people getting crushed and stood on.

‘People were leaving their partners behind to get on escalators.

‘It was frantic and it just seemed like nobody was really in control or in charge.

‘There were no announcements, nothing.’

A Heathrow spokesperson said: ‘This morning our teams worked with emergency services to respond to an incident in Terminal 2 which has now been resolved.

‘We ask passengers to check with their airline if flying from Terminal 2, the rest of the airport is operating normally.’
