We have several volunteer opportunities at PPYCC at the moment. These roles provide an excellent opportunity to give back to the community while developing valuable skills and relationships. If you have a passion for youth sports, a desire to give back to our community and make a meaningful impact, we would love to have you join our team! If interested in any of these, then just grab one of the team for a chat.
The first of these roles are event-oriented. PPYCC hosts exciting annual events like the National Youth Omnium, a Hill Climb (part of the South Downs Autumn Series) , and (previously) a Cyclo Cross event. We would like to bring back the CX event and also run more novice race events at the track and other suitable venues. These open events are not only vital fundraisers for the club, but your efforts will help create a vibrant youth racing community and provide valuable local opportunities for our club members, especially novice racers having their first experience of open competition.
Events coordinator (new role)
In the event co-ordinator role, you’ll be instrumental in planning and growing our racing calendar.
Key tasks:
Put together a club events calendar in October for the following season
Co-ordinate with other clubs to avoid date clashes
Facilitate inter-club races with other Sussex clubs
Ensure each club event has an appropriately trained event organiser (you don’t need to do any event organising yourself!)
Keep club event equipment in good working order (eg walkie talkies, stopwatches, race numbers)
Event organisers (new role)
In particular we need an Omnium organiser as Bill is stepping back after doing three successful years in the role, and a CX organiser to try and bring that race back into the programme, although the big challenge for the CX one is finding an appropriate venue. We are also keen to put on some novice race events at the track (road bikes, for all ages) that anyone can enter, which we’ve been talking about for a few years but not got round to doing. Whatever event you run, you’ll have a great support team around you so the actual work is shared, but you will be the person driving things forward and bringing it all together. Good organisation and communication skills are essential!
Key tasks:
Book race location and date
Manage bookings via British Cycling events system
Publicise event to other regional clubs, website, and social media
Compile rider start lists
Source volunteers for event roles (registration, marshals, etc)
Ensure things run smoothly on the day
Pre-event and post-event communications to competitors
Web / social media content creator (new role)
Do you have a flair for writing and a passion for cycling? You will be the voice of our club, sharing our successes, updates, and events with the wider community. Your storytelling skills will help promote our club and keep our members engaged and informed.
This role might suit youth contributors and could certainly be shared across multiple volunteers.
Key tasks:
Write and publish race reports on our website
Seek information from riders about events they competed in
Add photos and race report links on social media accounts.
Plus…. Coaches!
We are always open to new coaches joining our team. You don’t need to be an experienced cyclist to start out in coaching, but a passion for supporting and developing our young people is essential! The club pays for your training with British Cycling, who also vet you with the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS). There are training courses coming up in the South East, please chat to any existing coach about what this entails and you’d be welcome to shadow some sessions to see how things work and establish if you think it’s for you.
