A dangerous heat wave is scorching much of the US. Weather experts predict record-setting temps

A slow-moving and potentially record-setting heat wave is spreading across the Western U.S., sending many residents in search of a cool haven from the dangerously high temperatures. The National Weather Service says the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic regions of the U.S. are also sweltering, with oppressive heat and humidity expected to last through Saturday. Portland, Oregon, resident Sherri Thompson waited in her car with her chihuahua for a cooling center to open late Friday morning. She has lived in her car for three years and says she worries the high heat could cause a heat stroke.
