PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- Former Oregon Ducks cornerback and Minnesota Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson died in a car crash Friday night, his team announced Saturday. He was 24.

While details of the crash have yet to be released, ESPN first reported it happened in Jackson's hometown of Upper Marlboro, Maryland.

Jackson was selected by the Vikings in the fourth round of the 2024 draft and had been considered a contender to start at cornerback, ESPN added.

Both Jackson's current and former coaches reacted to the news of his sudden passing, with Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell stating on social media:

"I am absolutely crushed by this news. Khyree brought a contagious energy to our facility and our team. His confidence and engaging personality immediately drew his teammates to him. In our short time together, it was evident Khyree was going to develop into a tremendous professional football player, but what was more impressive was his desire to become the best person he could be for his family and those around him. I am at a loss for words. My heart goes out to Khyree's family, friends, teammates and coaches."

Since Jackson played his final season of college football at the University of Oregon, Ducks coach Dan Lanning also paid tribute to him on social media:

"RIP Khyree… Love you @Real_Khyree at a loss for words. I will miss your smile. Great player better person."
