Minnesota Vikings rookie Khyree Jackson dies in car crash, he was 24

(NEXSTAR) - Minnesota Vikings rookie cornerback Khyree Jackson died in a car crash that occurred overnight, according to multiple reports. He was 24 years old.

Jackson was killed along with two other people in the crash that occurred in Maryland, TMZ reports. Drafted in the fourth round by the Vikings, Jackson's journey to the NFL was a story of perseverance. He worked his way from playing in community college to taking multiple years off of football and working at a deli.

Jackson then found his way to Alabama where he made his first Division I start in the 2021 National Championship, where the Crimson Tide defeated Ohio State 52-24. He'd play there until the 2023 season when he transferred to Oregon to finish his collegiate career.

The Vikings posted a statement on X from head coach Kevin O'Connell saying, "I am absolutely crushed by this news. Khyree brought a contagious energy to our facility and team. His confidence and engaging personality immediately drew his teammates to him. In our short time together, it was evident Khyree was going to develop into a tremendous football player, but what was more impressive was his desire to become the best person he could be for his family and those around him. I am at a loss for words. My heart goes out to Khyree's family, friends, teammates, and others."

The Associated Press contributed to this story.
