Seaport Beach Fest brings the beach to Manhattan

Seaport Beach Fest brings the beach to Manhattan

MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- If you didn’t make it to the beach this holiday weekend — you can still celebrate in the sand.

The Seaport Beach Fest is happening through Sunday, at 89 South St. between Piers 16 and 17. The party brings food trucks, bars, live music and even a sandbox for those who couldn't make it down the shore or to another beach destination for the holiday weekend.

The festival even included a few hours just for the kids, complete with a dance party, arts and crafts, and contests.

"Living in Brooklyn you don't get to the shore that often. And it’s really easy to come to the Seaport," said Shirley Juste, who brought her daughter, Nicole, to the event.

"She loves to play in the sand, she wants to make a sandcastle. It’s easier for me to come here than to drive to Queens or Long Island for a fun beach day," Juste said.

Three-year-old Jesse O’Brien brought his little guitar so he could play some music while also playing in the sand. For his mom Danielle, it’s a great way to escape the hustle and bustle of the city without going too far.

"He likes the sand, he loves the pool. This is a nice combination for him – music and sand," she said.

Beach Fest is a four-day festival -- but Saturday is the only day especially for the kids. On Saturday night and Sunday, the patriotic festival will revert to more of a party scene, with live music, drinks and food for the grown-ups.

"It gives an escape from New York, but it’s still a New York vibe, and I think that’s what New Yorkers are looking for," said Sarah Russo, manager of marketing and events for the Seaport.
