Bennington Police searching for suspect of assault, attempted robbery

Bennington Police announced they are investigating an attempted armed robbery that occurred at the Bennington Walmart located on Northside Drive.

BENNINGTON, Vt. (NEWS10) -- Bennington Police announced they are investigating an attempted armed robbery that occurred at the Bennington Walmart located on Northside Drive. The incident took place on July 5 around 11:20 p.m.

Police say a suspect approached two Walmart employees while they were outside the store and pointed a firearm at them, attempting to rob the workers. The two employees were reportedly bound with duct tape while the suspect demanded money from them, but the suspect eventually ran off when a delivery truck drove by. Both workers were uninjured in the incident.

According to Bennington Police, the suspect ran to the business' parking lot and allegedly entered a 2023 white Toyota Highlander through the passenger window after displaying the gun. The driver was then forced out their car, and the suspect fled the area in the Highlander.

The driver was treated for minor injuries at the scene by the Bennington Rescue Squad. The car was later located by officers on Elm Street on Saturday.

Police say the suspect is unknown at this time. Witnesses described the person to officers as being a young white man, around 5’5” tall, who was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue jeans, white shoes, gloves and a mask.
