Red Sox Swap Minor League Arms In Deal With Tigers

Just hours after a 14-4 loss to the New York Yankees, the Boston Red Sox completed a minor league trade with the Detroit Tigers.

Boston acquired right-handed pitcher Trey Wingenter while sending right-hander CJ Weins back to Detroit, per a team release.

Weins had just under a year in In the Red Sox system. The 2023 sixth-round draft pick reached Low-A Salem and 29 batters in 19 appearances in 2024. He played his college ball at South Carolina and Western Kentucky.

As for Wingenter, the 30-year-old made a return to MLB with the Tigers after a four-year hiatus from the big leagues. The righty recorded a 3.31 ERA in 26 appearances this season with Triple-A Toledo.

The Red Sox currently sit 8 1/2 games in front of the Tigers in the American League wild-card standings. The clubs split a four-game series at Fenway Park earlier this season.
