Traffic calming measures should go further

Our economy relies heavily on tourist arrivals. Unfortunately, most beaches are extremely close to main roads with heavy traffic at times. The “calming” improvement made by the traffic cameras installed on the seafront road in Limassol is astounding. The difference crossing as a pedestrian and traffic noise improvements are remarkable.

Unfortunately, a small percentage of motorcyclists seem to be allowed to sabotage the system. Registration plates are either hidden under their rear mudguard or are non-existent. This makes them completely anonymous to traffic cameras and completely unidentifiable. Generally, these few “anonymous” bike and scooter riders also have the loudest exhaust pipes and the least respect for traffic rules, and it shows in the way they ride. Occasional surprise police roadblocks to enforce display of registration plates and legal silencers would make a big difference and would maximise the benefit from installing expensive cameras. A small action could make a huge difference.
