Building collapse in India leaves over 20 dead and injured

Indian authorities have confirmed that seven people died and 15 others were injured following the collapse of a six-story building in Gujarat state.

According to Indian media citing Rajesh Parmar, a state police official, the incident occurred after lunch on Saturday, July 6, in the city of Surat.

He attributed the cause of the collapse to continuous heavy rainfall over several days and expressed concern that more individuals might still be trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are ongoing, as reported by the state official of Gujarat.

Reports indicate that the building, nearly eight decades old, primarily housed textile workers and their families, most of whom were the victims of this tragic event.

Previously, in another incident in Uttar Pradesh state, at least 121 people lost their lives, and dozens were injured due to a stampede during a religious ceremony.

These incidents add to a series of tragedies across various Indian states involving collapses, fires, and stampedes during religious festivals, highlighting ongoing safety challenges and the need for stringent preventive measures.

Meanwhile, these unfortunate events underscore the critical importance of ensuring building safety standards and disaster preparedness across India, particularly during periods of heavy rainfall and large gatherings.
