Cubs Pitcher Breaks Hand Punching Wall
Chicago Cubs pitcher Colten Brewer has been placed on the 60-day injured list after breaking his left hand punching the dugout wall at Wrigley Field following his relief appearance Saturday. The 31-year-old reliever came into the game against the Los Angeles Angels in the third inning and was not able to complete the inning. Brewer allowed three runs, only one of which was earned after giving up two hits and two walks.
Brewer was taken out with two outs in the third inning and once he got into the dugout the right-handed pitcher unleashed his frustration by punching the wall inside the Cubs dugout. At the very least, Brewer used his non-pitching hand, but nonetheless Brewer will be out for a while with his broken hand.
Brewer has made 16 appearances with the Cubs this season after signing a minor league deal with the team last December. The right-handed pitcher was called up on April 17 and remained in the bullpen until the middle of May, when Brewer landed on the injured list with a strain in his lower back.
The Cubs activated Brewer from the injured list on June 11, and through his first eight outings of the year he was doing a solid job, posting a 2.84 ERA in 12.2 innings. He recorded his first MLB save against the San Francisco Giants on June 19, but he’s struggled ever since. Including Saturday’s performance against the Angels, Brewer gave up at least one run in four of his last five outings out of the bullpen.
Overall in 2024, Brewer has posted a 5.66 ERA in 20.2 innings, with 22 strikeouts and 9 walks.
Now, Brewer’s future with the Cubs appears to be bleak. The broken hand may very possibly end Brewer’s season and as a fringe guy on the 40-man roster this could mark the end of his time in the Cubs organization.
