STICK TO SINGLES: Keeping your whites totally separate from coloured fabrics is a game-changer.

Mixing colours can cause bleeding, dulling your bright whites, so take the time to fully separate garments with dark trims or tiny patterned sections.

GAME, SWEAT, MATCH: For stubborn marks or stains, such as sweat, pre-treat with stain remover and soak for at least an hour.

Pre-treating armpits, collars and cuffs will help whites stay spotless.

But you don’t need to splash out on pricey products.

Try Stardrops The Pink Stuff miracle remover, £1.50, Sainsbury’s.

Or you could use lemon juice, as its acidity can break down stains and restore brightness.

Mix half a cup with a sink of warm water and soak whites for an hour before washing as usual.

BAKE IN BRIGHTNESS: Adding half a cup of baking soda or white vinegar to your laundry can make a huge difference to how soft and vibrant your kit is.

Baking soda balances the pH level, which can make detergent more effective, plus it acts as a natural fabric softener.

White vinegar in the rinse cycle removes detergent residue and softens fabrics, so it is great for towels and sheets.

Get it in bulk at Amazon.co.uk, £5.99 for 5L.

COMMON FAULT: Overloading detergent is an easy mistake that can leave residue, making your whites look dingy.

Stick to the recommended amount to avoid build-up.

Washing powder is believed to keep whites bright, and a favourite is the budget Aldi Almat biological washing powder, £3.75 for 40 washes.

CATCH THE SUN: High heat can yellow your whites over time, putting you at a disadvantage.

Lower the heat setting on your dryer or, better yet, when the rain subsides, air dry your clothes.

The sun’s natural bleaching properties can help keep whites bright.
