Fresh off a lopsided 14-4 Saturday night loss, the Red Sox needed a response to leave New York with a beneficial series victory over the Yankees.

It didn’t come easy as a pitcher’s duel between Boston’s Kutter Crawford and New York’s Luis Gil severely limited the run production, putting the Red Sox and Yankees in a scoreless tie entering the start of the seventh inning. That prompted a much-needed response from Boston’s lineup, which up to that point, had only totaled three base hits off Gil.

Regardless, the (dominant) constant working to the advantage of Red Sox manager Alex Cora was Crawford’s gem in enemy territory. During New York’s turn at the plate in the seventh inning, Crawford sat down Aaron Judge, Alex Verdugo and Anthony Volpe consecutively after allowing a lead-off double to Juan Soto — the potential game-tying run.

Crawford’s seven innings gave Boston everything it needed and more.

By taking the finale, the Red Sox handed New York its eighth loss in its last 11 games.

STARS OF THE GAME
— Crawford tossed seven shutout innings, surrendering just four base hits while striking out four hitters. The right-hander made easy work of the Yankees, throwing just 68 pitches.

— Rafael Devers broke the scoreless tie by going yard in the seventh inning and made New York’s pitching pay again in the ninth inning, both times with solo home runs. The 27-year-old has gone deep 16 times in his career at Yankee Stadium, finishing 3-for-4 at the plate.

— Red Sox rookie Ceddanne Rafaela extended Boston’s lead with a solo home run of his own, going 1-for-3 at the plate.
