LeBron James says Dalton Knecht was one of his favorite college players to watch

A tradition unlike any other, LeBron James watching and loving college players the Lakers draft.

The Lakers may be months away from playing regular season games, but the summer is when that team takes shape.

The Lakers haven't added any free agents from other teams to their roster, but they've re-signed players like Max Christie, drafted Dalton Knecht and Bronny James and LeBron James has agreed on a new deal to stay in Los Angeles.

LeBron isn't relaxing on a beach somewhere resting his 39-year-old body. Instead, he's practicing with Team USA, preparing for the Paris Olympics.

After Team USA practice, he was asked about the coaching staff hires and his thoughts on the Lakers' rookie draft class.

Obviously, he has the bias that Bronny is his son, but he showered Knecht with some notable praise.

"Throughout the course of the college season, Dalton — besides, Bronny — was my favorite player in college basketball," LeBron said. "I watched his game throughout the whole season, I liked his ability to shoot the ball, his athleticism, his height, his demeanor that he plays with. I've always felt that his game will translate to the NBA. I did not think he would fall to No. 17 — at all — so I didn't even think we'd have an opportunity to get him but I'm glad we did."

James has a history of claiming to love the young players, from saying he knew Talen Horton-Tucker was good from his high school days to knowing Austin Reaves was him after one practice.

Maybe it's genuine, or just a soft compliment from a vet who knows public encouragement is good for these young guys, especially before the season starts.

As part of preparation for the season to come, Knecht is participating in the California Classic and will be playing in the Las Vegas Summer League.

Knecht has had a mixed experience so far in the California Classic. He's gotten some good looks but has struggled to convert them, shooting 6-25 in two games.

Again, it's a small sample size and not NBA games, but it'd be nice for Knecht to have some good performances in Summer League.

This would not only boost his confidence but also keep fans optimistic that he is a ready-now player who can help the Lakers win immediately.

James seems to think he fits that description, so patience will be needed until he shows more of it or the actual season starts.
