PHILADELPHIA (NEWS10) -- Shaker High School graduate Jeff Hoffman is in the midst of a breakout season with the Philadelphia Phillies, and his efforts throughout the first half of the MLB season have been rewarded.

The 31-year-old relief pitcher was named a National League all-star Sunday. In 38 appearances, Hoffman has posted a team-best and career-best 1.21 earned run average. He's posted a 3-1 record, and has notched eight saves, despite primarily serving as a set-up man for the Phillies' regular closer, José Alvarado.

Hoffman has only gotten better as his career has progressed. He debuted with the Colorado Rockies in 2016, and in five seasons in Denver, had just a 6.40 ERA.

Hoffman then spent two seasons with the Cincinnati Reds, where he took major strides, especially in the 2022 campaign when he went 2-0 with a then career-best 3.83 ERA.

But the Latham native has found new life in the "City of Brotherly Love." Hoffman's coming off a 5-2 2023 season with the 'Phils, where he again improved his ERA to 2.41. But the 2024 version of Hoffman has been by far the best, and his numbers are up there with some of the top relievers in baseball.

The 2024 MLB All-Star Game will be played Tuesday, July 16 at the Texas Rangers' Globe Life Field.
