Newcastle could start Premier League season with FIVE goalkeepers as Eddie Howe lines up shock £30m transfer

NEWCASTLE will still chase Burnley keeper James Trafford despite signing two shot-stoppers.

They had a £16million bid rejected by the Clarets before snapping up John Ruddy on a free and Odysseas Vlachodimos from Nottingham Forest.

However Trafford is still seen as a future No 1 and Toon chiefs will try to get closer to Burnley’s £30m valuation.

The goalkeeper joined Burnley in a £15m transfer from Manchester City last summer.

He made 28 appearances across all competitions but was dropped in March following a poor run of form.

Chelsea have also expressed an interest in signing him.

Should Newcastle decide to seal a deal for Trafford, they will start the 2024-25 season with five goalkeepers.

Eddie Howe has already added Vlachodimos and Ruddy to his ranks.

They will join Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka in the first team squad.

The Magpies signed Lloyd Kelly in a free transfer from Bournemouth when the transfer window opened.

Club chiefs also triggered Lewis Hall’s £35m release clause following his season-long loan at St James’ Park.

Newcastle kick off their 2024-25 Premier League campaign at home to Southampton next month.
