Choosing the perfect name for your child is extremely tricky, as you want something unique, but that isn’t too bizarre that your baby is at risk of being bullied.

Taking to Reddit, a woman revealed that her sister has always loved the sea, and was desperate to find a marine-themed name for her baby.

However, when the woman found out her sister’s intended baby name, she was in shock.

She said: “My sister is currently seven months pregnant and will be having a baby boy.

“For her whole life, she has loved the sea and aquatic/marine life.

“A few weeks ago I called her and asked if she had a name picked out.

“She said she settled on the name “Seabass”, yes, the fish (I am not making this up, I truly wish I was).

“She’s always been a playful person so I truly thought she was joking but she said she really loved it.

“Yesterday I went to visit her to help her with the nursery, and she had one of those custom name signs that said ‘Seabass’, and a blanket with his name on it.

“I told her that I really don’t think this is a good choice and tried to give her other nature or ocean” themed names, but she wasn’t having it and said the name ‘feels right for him’.

“I know he’s not my child, so I’m trying to respect her choice. But am I overreacting here? Or is my sister just wild for this?”

The post was flooded with hundreds of responses from social media users, many of whom re-assured the woman that she was not over-reacting about the name.

One person said: “Tell your sister she is naming a future adult!

Banned Names in the UK

The UK has no law restricting names, but names that contain obscenities, numerals, misleading titles, or are impossible to pronounce are likely to be rejected when registering a child.

  • Monkey
  • Cyanide
  • Martian
  • Akuma
  • Chow Tow
  • Rogue

“The name Seabass is atrocious”.

A second person said: “Respectfully, your sister has lost her damn mind.

“I hope she comes back to reality soon. There are so many lovely ocean-based names too!”

A third person said: “That is an horrific name. It’s not just you!”

A fourth added: “No, you’re not overreacting. That is a terrible name and he will be teased mercilessly.

“Just because she likes it doesn’t mean it’s good and she’s failing to realise she is naming a whole person with their wants, needs, and opinions.

“This little boy will become a man and most likely change his name.”

A fifth chimed in: “I actually can’t think of a way to respond to this in a nice way… I am genuinely flabbergasted”.
